Wachau Panorama
Wachauer Himmelstiege

“He who toils this vineyard need not fear the depths of hell – in his hand lies the key to St. Peter’s pearly gate”. This old saying about the “Himmelstiege” says it all. What sounds like a promising afterlife reward gives reason to entertain some doubt in the profane here and now. As legendary as the wines, as steep and exposed was the former Dürnstein vineyard. The vineyard itself was eventually abandoned but the manual cultivation of Dürnstein’s steep terraces is toilsome and laborious as ever.

Today the Himmelstiege lends its name to a selection of wines from steeply terraced vineyards in the "commune" of Dürnstein. These wines impress with classic fruit aromas and a strong mineral character thanks to the vineyards’ unique exposition. The extraordinary combination of the somewhat milder climate of the eastern part of Wachau valley and the meager primary rock soils yield wines with powerful elegance.
