The 2017 vintage and growing season

The 2017 vintage will be remembered for its warmth, frost, heat-waves and cold spells. It was a year pushed to its limits, but fortunately not to excess. The work within the vineyards was adapted to suit these conditions, and it paid off noticeably and ensured the harvest of healthy, ripe grapes.

A warm spring came after a cold January. In the first week of April, we even experienced temperatures of 28 °C (82 °F) at bud break, which was then followed by a frosty spell of minus 2 °C (28 °F) on April 21 and 24. As with the former vintage in the Wachau, small straw-flamed fires were placed in the vineyards to protect the young shoots. Fortunately, this time around, the late frost damage was kept to a minimum.

Flowering occurred at the beginning of June, followed by an extremely hot summer: 2017 was the third warmest year ever recorded (after the years 2015 and 2003) with 36 hot days in the region. A healthy soil with vitality provides a significant amount of balance, and therefore the steps taken in our vineyards over the past ten years have been very important. The build up of humus layers through cover crops and revitalization of the soils show very positive results. Due to these precautions, combined with a cool September with some rainfalls, we have been able to retain the acidity and freshness of the wines.

The first tastings of the wines display texture and density, juiciness and fruit precision. A style that has similarities with the 2015 and 2012 vintages and that combines substance with liveliness.
