Wachau Panorama

2019: Warm year, cool wines

At the end of October, we brought in the last grapes of the 2019 season. After a lengthy ripening period and ideal harvest conditions, we expect elegant profound wines, with enormous potential, revealing a complexity of aromas with good depth.

The Wachau region remained dry and surprisingly warm during the winter. Originally, we had expected an early harvest as with the previous vintage. But May came with long-awaited rain and cool temperatures that slowed down growth, already well advanced, back into balance.

While it was hot from June until late August, temperatures were never really extreme. Autumn weather arrived on schedule, and with it warm and mostly sunny days and progressively cooler temperatures at night. For the grapes this meant an exceptional balance of ripeness to acidity.

We expect 2019 to rank among the most elegant and subtle vintages of the last years. Alcohol levels rank below the previous vintages. After a long growing season characteristic flavour profiles for both styles Federspiel and Smaragd developed. We expect well balanced wines that combine a fine minerality and precision with great structure.
