London Tasting – 10 years after

The tasting is now legendary. It changed the way the wine world viewed not only Grüner Veltliner, but Austrian wine in general.

Sceptics predicted a passing fad, but ten years later Grüner Veltliner has held its place as darling of the wine world. Not only has Austria’s leading grape variety continued to captivate the pundits, wine lovers around the world have also come to know and love the “groo-vee” grape.

In October 2002, insiders were beginning to talk about “that difficult to pronounce grape from Austria” that was performing so well in international tastings. Jancis Robinson MW and Tim Atkin MW organized a blind tasting and invited 16 of Britain’s top wine writers, merchants and sommeliers. Austrian Grüners and Chardonnays were pitted against some of the world’s very best Chardonnays from several vintages – including Montrachet and Corton from lustrous producers like Leflaive and Ramonet. Seven Austrian wines appeared among the top ten and included the Grüner Veltliner Exceptional 2000 from the Domäne Wachau.
