Pure Terroir: Ried Loibenberg

Rising up to 400 meters in elevation, Ried Loibenberg is a distinctive landmark in eastern Wachau. Its 35 hectares of mostly terraced vineyards place it among the largest and most diverse single sites in the region. 400-million-year-old Gföhl gneiss predominates here, creating a unique foundation for the vines. The south-facing portion of the terraces receive optimal sunshine, which is why the Loibenberg is known as the “Stovetop of the Wachau.”

The site’s climate is shaped largely by its elevation differences and fall winds from the Waldviertel (northern plateau to Wachau), which produce differing ripening phases. The upper parcels are a cradle for taut, precise Federspiel wines, while the middle and lower parcels, which spill into the plain below, are known for compact and powerful Smaragd wines. Another notable geological aspect: the loess deposits, in some cases in solid banks, which modify the structure of the Loibenberg in its eastern section, produce a softer texture and greater fruitiness in the wines.

Domäne Wachau cultivates over 5 hectares here, primarily Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. The wines are known for a taut, racy style that is more typical of the western Wachau than the classic Loibenberg profile. Domäne Wachau produces two elegant Federspiele from Riesling and Grüner Veltliner and a nuanced Riesling Smaragd.
