Wachau vintners realized early that their steep, tiny region would never compete globally with volumes of cheap quaff, but they had potential for world-class quality…
The Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus vintner association was established in 1983 to ensure the highest quality and protect the reputation of Austria’s most famous winegrowing area. While in other parts of Austria many vintners were trying to compete by price with off-dry to semi-sweet wines, leading vintners in the Wachau were concentrating on producing dry white wines of inimitable character and extraordinary quality. The vintner association developed and committed to an extremely strict Wachau Codex or “Charter of Pure Wine” based on 6 principles.
The first principle is dedicated to origin and the wines must not only come from the small legally demarcated region of Wachau, they must be bottled there as well. To offer 100% guarantee of origin, grapes, wine and must from other regions are not even allowed in the cellar. Absolutely no adulteration is permitted: no chaptalization, no concentration, no fractionation, and no aromatization including influence of new oak. Hand-picked grapes and pure unadulterated Wachau are guaranteed in wine bottles labelled with the Vinea Wachau trademarks Steinfeder®, Federspiel® and Smaragd®.
