Wachau Panorama

Decanter magazine praises our Blauer Zweigelt Terrassen 2015

Decanter recently conducted a blind tasting of Austrian red wines. We were pretty surprised: our juicy, cool climate Zweigelt placed among the top.

The Decanter tasting panel was evidently surprised, too. They wrote, "the last place in Austria where you would expect the variety". Seeking a logical conclusion for the success of a Zweigelt from Wachau, "a great terroir speaks?" is what they wrote.

Decanter was generally pleased with the Austrian reds, in particular those from indigenous varieties, which they said are "perfectly adapted to Austria’s terroirs and microclimates".

Stephen Brook led the Decanter tasting and knows Austrian wines well. Also on the tasting panel were Lance Foyster (Master of Wine) and Stefan Neumann (Head Sommelier at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, London). The panel of experts awarded our Blauer Zweigelt Terrassen 2015 with 90 points. The grapes for this wine come from various sites including the very cool Spitzer Graben, which demonstrates that with the right exposition and suitable soil, Wachau can indeed produce excellent red wines. Cool climate character is expressed in our Zweigelt’s fine-boned, taut structure and depth of aroma. Maturation in large used wooden casks insured that it retained its refreshing red currant and cherry fruit and elegant finesse.
